Introduction
JJL Blasting was commissioned by the renowned hospitality group Stange & Co Ltd to undertake a sensitive exterior and interior restoration of the Ring O’ Bells, a landmark pub in West Kirby. The goal was to strip back decades of modern coatings to reveal the building’s authentic architectural soul.
Project Overview
This project required a meticulous, phased approach over two months. Working closely with the project architect, we utilised the TORC method, a specialist, English Heritage-recognised low-pressure system. This allowed us to gently lift multiple layers of paint and lime wash from the exterior without compromising the integrity of the delicate red sandstone beneath. Internally, we applied the same precision to strip a historic covered fireplace, restoring it as a central focal point for the pub’s interior.
Before/After
The transformation shifts the building from a dated, painted exterior with hidden masonry to a stunning, raw sandstone finish that celebrates the Wirral’s local geology. Internally, a cluttered, painted-over fireplace is transformed into a clean, heritage stone feature.

The gallery highlights the phased removal of white lime wash, showing the gradual transition as the natural warm red sandstone is revealed. It also features detailed shots of the internal fireplace restoration and the specialised TORC equipment in action.
Client Quote
“The architect specifically requested the TORC method for this restoration. Jamie and his team stayed on-site and worked in stages to ensure the sandstone was exposed perfectly, providing a clean substrate for our in-house repointing team.” — Stange & Co Ltd
Result
By using an English Heritage-approved cleaning method, we ensured the building’s longevity and historical value. The clean, damage-free stone provided the perfect “key” for the client’s internal team to begin repointing, resulting in a prestigious finish for this popular community hub.
