Introduction
JJL Blasting was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive external restoration of a row of traditional stone cottages in the heart of Whittle-le-Woods in
Chorley. The project focused on stripping away layers of modern masonry paint and industrial carbon staining to restore the original character of these period homes.
Project Overview
The stone surrounds on the doors and windows were heavily obscured by old paint, while the main elevations suffered from thick carbon deposits. To ensure the safety of the residents and the surrounding neighbourhood, we utilised the
Dustless Blasting method. This
wet-blasting technique effectively suppressed dust at the source, allowing us to clean the stone thoroughly without the mess associated with traditional
dry blasting. Following the cleaning, we performed a full repointing in lime mortar. This was a critical step, as lime allows the historic stone to “breathe,” preventing the moisture trap and damp issues often caused by modern cement.
Before/After
The transformation shifts the cottages from a mismatched, painted, and soot-blackened exterior to a uniform, natural stone finish. The removal of the dark carbon staining has significantly brightened the entire street-facing facade, revealing the beautiful natural hues of the local stone.
Gallery
The gallery showcases the precision of the Dustless Blasting system, with action shots of the paint being lifted from intricate window mullions. Further images highlight the texture and craftsmanship of the fresh lime mortar joints against the cleaned
Lancashire stone.
